The Raine Study has a wealth of data collected over 35+ years
The Raine Study is one of the world’s most comprehensive pregnancy and birth cohort studies, with over 35 years of longitudinal data. It primarily focuses on Generation 2 (Gen2), the original Raine Study babies, with data collected from prenatal to adult life, covering physical and mental health, development, lifestyle, genetics and environment.
Their parents, Generation 1 (Gen1), have been less extensively phenotyped. Data has been collected indirectly and includes essential demographics, health and biological parameters, across 12 follow-up studies, with one additional follow-up with targeted assessment for the Gen1 participants assessing sleep, obesity and activity.
A data collection on both Gen1 and Gen2 participants is currently under way, along with collection of data from Generation 3 (Gen3, the children of Gen2) and Generation 2B (Gen2B) who constitute our Gen3’s ‘other biological parents’ who were not born into the Raine Study.
The dataset includes:
- 30 million genetic and epigenetic data points
- 170,000 curated biological samples
- 30,000 phenotypic variables

Strengths of Raine Study data
Since 1989, Gen2 participants have completed 17 follow-ups, with data gathered via:
- Validated questionnaires and assessment tools
- Physical measurements
- Biological samples (e.g., maternal blood, cord blood, milk teeth, saliva, urine, stool DNA, and more).
This depth and continuity enable researchers to explore long-term health trajectories and intergenerational influences with precision.

A detailed inventory of methodologies used across follow-ups ensures transparency and scientific rigor. It includes procedures, instruments, and measures used during data collection. Follow-up Timeline – Generation 2
Generation 2 follow-ups occurred at key life stages: Pre-birth (18 weeks and 34 weeks gestation, birth, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 10, 14, 17, 18, 20, 22, 25 27, and 28 years. Follow-up name reflects the average age of participants. For example, the Gen2-22-year follow-up captured data when Gen2 participants were 22 years old.
